Faced with the choice between talking about tonight’s pitching match-up between Cliff Lee and Andy Pettitte, or talking about Eric Wedge the new Mariners manager, I would prefer the ALCS game but this is a Mariners Blog after all don’t you know…
So welcome to Seattle Eric Wedge, you seem like a nice enough guy with a little intensity to boot. I am sure you had other choices of second-tier clubs to work for and we are glad you decided to try things out here in the Northwest. You probably are busy trying to say all the right things for now so you can stay employed in this tough economy ie : Seattle is a great city, great ownership group, nice stadium blah blah blah. I noticed you did not mention how you are looking forward to managing a great team, well at least you are honest in acknowledging that this team is a train-wreck, that is a good start my friend.
Also you may note that it rains a lot here and the fans are kind of fickle. We are not like Cleveland in that there is a lot of other things to do here in the summer and if a team sucks for to long (since 2002) we slowly start to fade away. So Eric, don’t take it personal,as this sinking ship started a long time ago and most of us real fans are so disappointed that we won’t blame you for the outcome on the field. We have come to realize that the problems with this franchise are a result of an absentee-owner and a couple of old hacks see:( Chuck Armstrong and Howard Lincoln). So basically you can do whatever you want (besides anything to do with Ichiro or Felix) and most people here will like you in our classic passive-aggresive way.
Just thought I would remind you that since the housing market is still dropping and Mariners managers usually don’t hang around more than a year or two, that you may want to just rent an apartment or better yet make Jack Z. spring for one of those extended stay Hotels while you are here.
I would ask one favor though, Is there any chance you could bring that guy over from Cleveland who bangs the drum at every home game? We have had enough of the Hydro Races and hat tricks and would like to see some authentic enthusiasm from a fan instead of the artificial environment that has been created in our Baseball theme-park known as Safeco Field. Also the whole Milton Bradley thing is no biggie either way, if you don’t like him just tell the big bosses and maybe they will get rid of him and swallow the 12 million next year as they are used to this sort of thing. I mean it’s not like he is Ken Griffey Jr….. http://jeffsmariners.com
