Ozzie Guillen Suspended for upsetting Cuban Community with Castro remarks

I am not going to write much about the Mariners 1-0 loss tonight to the Rangers except to say Blake

Beavan pitched as good as we can expect from him tonight which is a good thing.Unfortuanetly Neftali Feliz in his first shot as a starter was a little better holding the Mariners to just four hits. Its still possible we could get a split out of this series but the odds are tilting against us.

Actually I was more captivated today by all the buzz about Ozzie Guillen the notorious loudmouth and his latest reference to Fidel Castro in Cuba that has gotten him in Hot water including a five-day suspension from his bosses down in Miami who in turn are being pressured by the powerful Cuban ex-Pat community that has always had a stranglehold on the politics in Dade County where the new stadium is located down in Florida.

I have mixed emotions on this whole bizarre situation, on the one hand I know Fidel Castro has been heavy-handed over the years locking up political dissidents in Cuba who didn’t follow the party line.On the other hand being a progressive and someone who grew-up during the Cold War, which by the way has been over for 20 years I know that the Cuban people have also made major gains in the areas of medical care and education since Castro and his comrades overthrew the dictatorship of Fulgencia Batista in 1959.

In 1934 Fulgencio Batista took over the Cuban government in what became known as “The Revolt of the Sergeants.” For the next twenty-five years he ruled Cuba with an iron fist, and the full blessing and endorsement of the United States government, who feared a social and economic revolution and saw him as a stabilizing force with respect for American interests.

Batista established lasting relationships with organized crime, and under his guardianship Havana became known as “the Latin Las Vegas.” Meyer Lansky and other prominent gangsters were heavily invested in Havana, and politicians from Batista on down took their cut.

Through Lansky, the mafia knew they had a friend in Cuba. A summit at Havana’s Hotel Nacional, with mobsters such as Frank Costello, Vito Genovese, Santo Trafficante Jr., Moe Dalitz and others, confirmed Luciano’s authority over the U.S. mob, and coincided with Frank Sinatra’s 1946 singing debut in Havana. It was here that Lansky gave permission to kill Bugsy Siegel.

Many of Batista’s enemies faced the same fate as the ambitious Siegel. Nobody seemed to mention the many brutal human rights abuses that were a regular feature of Batista’s private police force. Nobody, that is, except the many in Cuba who opposed the U.S.-friendly dictator which ended in 1959 when Fidel Castro led a revolution to oust Batista and created a Socialist state which is amongst the last in the world still standing.

The powerful and wealthy elites from Cuba who fled to Miami after the revolution have never forgotten this era though there is rarely any discussion about the previous dictator Batista and his shenanigans. Ozzie apparently made some remark about how he respected Castro for surviving all these years, which whether he meant it or not is a huge no-no down in Miami.

As it stands now Ozzie has made a public apology and is serving out his five-game suspension which he has deserved many other times for saying dumb things but never anything as political as this. One has to wonder in an era where Rush Limbaugh and Jerry Springer are seen as credible public figures why a manager of a MLB team can’t say anything about politics. Does the First Amendment apply to Ozzie Guillen or only if he is calling other players and managers foul names but not anything political? I realize this is a touchy topic but it seems a little more interesting than Blake Beavan’s approach to pitching.Go M’s http://jeffsmariners.com

Moneyball Hits the Sweetspot

Just got back from Guild 45th street theatre here in Wallingford after watching Moneyball and my mind is clear and my heart is pumping. The movie was great and it may come as a shock to some of you but I was impressed with the storyline whi

ch I recall watching unfold from a distance as our Mariners began their descent from the glory days of 95-01 and the A’s had their nice run. Brad Pitt did a masterful job conveying the drive and integrity of Billy Beane as he stuck to his guns and followed his vision despite all the naysayers utilizing a new way of putting a team together using theories though up by Bill James in the 70′s.

James who was snagged by the Red Sox and still works as a senior advisor there was recently quoted as saying :” My work is trying to figure out how to quantify something that has previously been regarded as intangible,” James says.“It’s not to say that there aren’t true intangibles. People think that you start with the statistics, which was never true. You start with a question and you end up with a statistic.”

But this movie was a snapshot of the era where his theories were put to the test by Billy Beane before everyone else began trying to get an edge in the game. As a fan I am happy for those lucky folks in Oakland who got to watch their team compete in the early moneyball era including setting a record by winning 20 games in a row in 2002 which was played out beautifully in the film. To be honest perhaps I am a bit jealous that this didn’t happen in Seattle considering the painful seasons we had in the era when Billy Beane was trailblazing. I was most impressed with the strong character portrayed by Brad Pitt of a man who was not afraid to do something on principal and stick to his guns.

Of course there were some great shots of actual footage of the players from that era including David Justice, Miguel Tejada, Mike Sweeney, Johnny Damon and others who are now either out of the game or in the twilight of their respective careers. Phillip Seymour Hoffman plays the stoic Art Howe and like all his work it was quite authentic and believable. You can’t help but root for Billy Beane and his assistant GM as they play the underdog and almost go all the way though as we all know the A’s never “won the final game of the series” as Beane says in the film.

I suppose some of you are wondering if I have lost my mind or am just plain flaky after yesterday’s post which got quite a few folks riled up! Actually I have always respected Billy Beane as a GM and am developing more respect for Bill James, but my issue is not with using the latest technologies and statistics to put a team together but rather with some of the Stat-Heads (improvement over Sta-Geeks). I suppose it is sort of like my admiration for Jesus Christ but disdain for some of the folks who call themselves Christians and are “talking the talk but not walking the walk”.

But the reality is that new baseball metrics are a here to stay and when used correctly in conjunction with other sound baseball principals can help in scouting players as well as helping to improve performance on the field. Heart, innovation and drive are all still important elements for winning as portrayed in the film. This movie hit the sweetspot for me as we wind down another regular season as well as helping to revive my personal romance with the game of baseball. You have to see this movie whether you are a casual fan, Stat-Head or even a grumpy old-school guy like me! Go M’s http://jeffsmariners.com

Stat-Geeks are ruining Sports and taking over Mariners Blogosphere

Well the Mariners magic ran out of juice today In Minnesota due to the inability to get a big clutch hit when it counted allowing the Twins to snap their eleven game losing streak with a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth to win it 3-2. Now I

know some of you don’t believe in words like clutch hits, team chemistry or hot streaks as they don’t fit into cute little sabermetrics stats that attempt to put everything into precise terms and thus take the mystery and fun out of this great National Pastime of ours known as baseball.

So in honor of the release of the movie “Moneyball” which is coming out this week I just want to go on the record to say that the Sta-Geeks have gone to far and that they are ruining baseball. I am not alone with this opinion as evidenced by the article put out today by Jason Whitlock at Fox Sports : http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/sabermetrics-moneyball-stat-geeks-are-ruining-sports-092211

I started this Mariners Blog last season as a way to express and share my love for the game of Baseball. Sadly the Mariners have had two terrible seasons despite employing sabermetrics types in the front office, which has made this team tough to follow but my passion for the game seems to drive me on. I guess there is no known advanced metrics formula to measure committment to this game but I suppose I have a high WAR in that area and I have a feeling I will out sit a lot of the Stat-Geeks who seem so cold and unattached to the beauty of this game.

I realize that most of the attention in the Mariners Blogosphere goes to the more established Blogs like USS Mariner, Lookout Landing and Sojo Mojo. And I even read these guys, but my perspective is more old-school in case you haven’t noticed. Perhaps I am part of a dying breed of Baseball Fans like Jason Whitlock from Fox who are trying to hold on to a more colorful and fun era of baseball where everything was not reduced to mathematical calculations. Well so be it, but I am too old to change now and I am not going anywhere for awhile so if any of you Stat-Geeks happen to be offended by my post or the one by Whitlock you may need to go read one of the Blogs that delights in always proving how superior they are with their new calculations and formulas. I love this game too much to reduce it to a mere science. Go M’s http://jeffsmariners.com

Prince Fielder Powers NL to 5-1 win in All Star game

Prince Fielder was named the MVP of the All Star game after smashing a three-run homer in the fourth inning to put the National League up for good as they went on to win 5-1. Our local boy Michael Pineda was perfect in the inning he pitched fanning a pair and only facing three batters. On the other hand our closer Brandon League allowed a run on two hits including a double  in the bottom half of the seventh to Pablo Sandoval otherwise known as the ” Panda” to score the NL run.

The AL got their only run off the bat of Red Sox slugger Adrian Gonzalez by way of the long ball. Otherwise this game was kind of boring though it is nice to see the best players in the game today out on the field wearing the jerseys of their own clubs. The announcing job done over at Fox with Joe Buck and Tim McCarver was as odd as ever bouncing from one topic to another without much concern as to what was happening on the field. Joe Buck is perhaps even more annoying to listen to than Dave Sims which says a lot. McCarver on the other hand is losing his touch and was not able to deliver the sorts of insights into the state of the game that I have grown fond of over the years.

There was one great moment when Heath Bell sprinted in from the bullpen to the mound sliding on the grass at the last minute much to the delight of the fans and players present. I was hoping Brian Wilson from the Giants would do something to top Bell wnen he came in to close out the game in the ninth with two runners aboard, but Wilson stayed in control holding a pair of runners from scoring which is his ”Day Job” job after all.

It was disappointing that Derek Jeter could not find the time to fly out and at least get introduced and take a bow in front of the fans gathered at the indoor stadium in Phoenix. I understand that none other than Willie Mays was upset over this and said so in the Wall Street Journal:‘I was rewarded 24 times as an All-Star, and I went 24 times. It’s not jury duty, guys should show up.’” , good for him.

So the National League wins for the second year in a row and thus will get home field advantage in the 2011 World Series as a result of the 5-1 win tonight and after another day off play will resume back here in Seattle with the Texas Rangers coming to town. This break has done me some good as far as putting this game into perspective, for as Heath Bell proved in the youtube clip above baseball is actually fun! Go M’s http://jeffsmariners.com
