Mariners Fans trying to get excited about Spring Training

As many of you know for the last couple of years I have made the trip to Peoria to soak in the sun and watch the Mariners as they got ready for the season. Both experiences were great and I highly recommend the trip south if you have never done it be

fore. Sadly on both occasions Spring Training turned out to be the highlight of both the 2010 and 2011 campaigns.

So this year I have decided to stay home here in gloomy Seattle as I just can’t seem to get excited about the 2012 Mariners though it appears there is a good chance they will be better than the last two years clubs. I don’t think I’m alone with my “Wait and See” attitude here in the NW, in fact it seems that after 35 years many of the loyal die-hard fans I know are suffering from broken hearts on this Valentines Day when it comes to rooting for the Mariners.

I do wish I would have gotten a chance to see Ichiro up close one more time as he probably will be done after 2012 barring an amazing comeback. I suppose the same can be said for Chone Figgins, though I’m not sure if I ever want to see him again wearing a Mariners uniform whether I’m in Peoria or down at Safeco Field. And of course we have some good young talent that could surprise us all this year if everything clicks, but I don’t see anyway we are going to compete with the likes of the Rangers or Angels here in the AL West this season.

It will also be the second year without Dave Niehaus around and so that link to the past will begin to fade away and the Mariners organization will have to really go out on a limb with the marketing squad if they expect to pull on our heart-strings one more time with references to the glory days from 1995-2001. I suppose this years slogan will be something like “It’s Going to get Better Soon”. Or maybe some sort of reference to the Klondike Gold Rush era with: ” Mariners Prospecting for Gold” complete with new bobbleheads of our guys in “turn of the century outfits”.

I suppose I may sound a bit negative and perhaps a trip to Arizona would have done me good but this Mariners Fan just can’t seem to get excited about this year. Let me know how all of you are feeling about this season, if your upbeat tell me why, if not now is your chance to share a Spring Training rant with the rest of Mariners Nation. Go M’s

You have to get excited for these Mariner’s, thats what Jack Z. was hired for and it erks me everytime somebody bitches about the Mariner’s. He was brought in to restore the farm system and rebuild the team from all the has beens and old guys. He’s doing that and it takes time to get there. I told you before, Eric Wedge managed the Cleveland Indians from a bunch of young nobodys to contenders and he is going to do the same with the Mariner’s. Keep the faith brother, it might not turn this year but the good times are coming and I will be ther through thick and thin and so should you.

I’m true blue from the beginning. I’ve seen a LOT of bad M’s squads. We got taste of what winning is like, and now we crave it even more. All I’ve ever asked for was a contender. As fans, it’s good to be critical of bad moves, and horrible play. That’s what real fans do. We do it because we love our team.

Thanks for the comment Todd. And reitirating how its ok for fans to be upset with their team at times because they love ther squad. Trust me I havent given up hope yet…But need to be able to express my feelings after 35 years with no World Series!

I’m excited for baseball but I’m not going to get super excited for the M’s this year. I feel if I do get excited they’ll just stink and play average baseball.

I want to be surprised come May when they are in first place! Then I’ll get a little more excited.

Sorry to hear you have given up on spring training, What ever the future holds for the M’s…spring training is a time to dream, to hope, and to fantasize about what could be. I sat next to you last year at spring training and enjoyed our conversation. I will be there again for the opening game of spring training, soaking up some of that great AZ sun, with hope and a dream of what could be.

I go every year I can just love going to the games, watching people, seeing new players ,enjoying being off work. I have made it to every park seen every team each of the last 6 years. I have a bad case of BASEBALLISM ,1 year I drove to Baltimore to watch baseball (oh yeah I stopped and watch games all the way across the USA too,13 stadiums and their teams)
