The Mariners sent reliever down to Tacoma before today”s game to bring the opening day roster down to 27,still a couple shy of the magic number 25 before we head to Oakland Friday to open the season again against the A”s. Today”s 9-8 loss as sloppy as it was may have given Manager and his staff even more stress as they try to narrow things down to 25 thanks to a convincing performance by who went 4-5 including a two-run homer.
Peguero has five dingers this spring to lead the team to go along with a respectable .294 batting average for the big slugger. Of course after last year many in the Mariners blogosphere soured on Peguero after watching him fan time after time on balls outside the strike zone. The Mariners have announced that they will make their final decision on the 25-man roster after tomorrow”s game so it could indeed go down to the wire for Peguero along with a handful of others.
looks like a lock after going 2-5 today with a double and a triple so he doesn”t need to worry. And looks much better this spring and will probably get the nod in center going into 2012 at least until heals-up completely. And of course what else can be said about the scrappy utility infielder who had a couple more hits today to boost his average up to a crisp .450 to lead all of Baseball this spring, he is in too unless he gets hurt Wednesday in our last warm-up game.
So that leaves , George Sherril, , Rule-5 pick Lucas Lutege and perhaps even as the potential odd guys out. Will the Mariners finally cut all ties with Figgins after a mediocre spring, or send a couple of others down instead? There is a possibility that or could go to but I doubt it.
So we will just have to wait and see what the guys who are hired to make these sorts of tough decisions do after tomorrow. It does appear that the Mariners “Plan” is starting to take shape as evidenced by a winning Spring Training featuring a lot of offense especially since returning from Japan. I am cautiously optimistic about the 2012 campaign, though having followed this club for what will be my 35th season this year I don”t expect to contend in a tough AL West. To be honest I would be happy with a .500 season, I”d love to hear what all of you think our chances are in 2012 via comments.
